History

Angus Beef CattleThe Angus breed of cattle is originally from Scotland. The strain was born by interbreeding of closely related cattle breeds in the shires of Aberdeen, Kincardie and Angus which have been in the area for over 1000 years. The resulting strains of cattle have a long history in the area and are also commonly known as the Aberdeen Angus in many parts of the world.

Australia’s first import of Angus cattle went into Tasmania in the early 1820s and to the Darling Downs in Queensland in 1840. The breed has spread to the rest of the country since. Today they are distributed mainly in high rainfall areas throughout Victoria, New South Wales, Tasmania and Western Australia. Recent years, however, have seen an increase in popularity of the Angus breed in parts of Northern Australia.

Breeding Specifics

Angus BeefAngus beef outperforms other breeds in various ways. Angus is a versatile breed, hardy and easy to manage and also has an excellent genetic pool, which ensures high-quality breeding. This particular breed responds remarkably well to commercial demands as there is an immense pool of available genetics that will allow the breed to respond to new challenges.

Angus Beef BullAngus cattle are polled and can be black or red in colour although black is the dominant colour. They tend to be moderate-sized and muscular cattle and mature earlier than other breeds. Angus bulls give consistent high conception rates with heavy working loads and Angus cows are fertile and have an ease of calving until a late age.
